How to Become an IHC Volunteer

IHC volunteers represent a cross-section of our community and are of varied ages, social and economic status, backgrounds, religions, races, and interests. The only requirement to volunteering with IHC is a willingness to meet new people of different cultures, extend a warm welcome to Hawaii, share friendship and common interests, and exchange ideas. Download a Host Family Application Form and mail it to IHC today and we will match you with an exchange student!

Volunteers are free to set the frequency of participation, select participants to host and indicate areas of particular interests.

Our volunteer community includes:

  1. Students

  2. Single adults

  3. Single parents

  4. Married/Partnered couples (with and without children)

  5. Families with grown children

  6. Seniors

All volunteers are welcome!

Homestay Host Families

Homestay hosts are asked to provide room and board, to include the international participant in family activities and to treat the participant as an active member of the “family,” rather than as a formal guest.  Hosts are unique and different – anyone can be a host!

Each host has something unique and special to offer in this rewarding opportunity to “bring the world home.”  Volunteers should be friendly, eager to learn, pleased to meet new people, tolerant, flexible, willing to share, proud of one’s community and country.  A sense of humor can definitely be an invaluable asset in crossing cultures!

To apply to become a volunteer IHC host, please complete the application form (pdf) to let us know of your interest.

For more information, please call us at (808) 521-3554 or email us at ihc@priory.net.
